Equipment Guide

Demolition

Demolition is a precision operation — uncontrolled demolition is the leading cause of site accidents in the construction industry. The right equipment sequence ensures the structure comes down predictably, debris is managed safely, and the cleared site is ready for the next phase without delay.

What to rent and why

01Primary structure demolition

Heavy Excavator

Why for Demolition

A high-reach or standard excavator with a demolition bucket is the primary tool for bringing down masonry and concrete structures up to G+3. The excavator's reach allows the operator to work from a safe distance while pulling down walls systematically from the top. For structures taller than four floors, a high-reach arm extended to 18–22m is used instead of working at height.

Best practice

Always demolish from the top down, one floor at a time. Disconnect all services (electricity, water, gas) before starting. Survey the structure for pre-existing collapse risks — cracked columns or settled foundations — before the excavator approaches. Wet down debris continuously to suppress dust and protect surrounding properties.

02Reinforced concrete breaking

Hydraulic Breaker

Why for Demolition

A hydraulic breaker (hammer) is fitted to the excavator arm as a tool attachment. It breaks reinforced concrete slabs, columns, and foundations that cannot be pulled apart by a bucket alone. The breaker is standard on any RCC demolition job — structural concrete without the breaker can halt the entire operation.

Best practice

Keep the breaker perpendicular to the work surface — angled operation bends the chisel and reduces impact energy by up to 40%. Do not run the hammer continuously for more than 15–20 seconds in one spot; reposition before re-engaging. Check accumulator pressure at the start of every shift.

03Debris clearance & site mobilisation

Tipper / Dumper

Why for Demolition

Demolition generates large volumes of inert debris — concrete rubble, brick, and steel reinforcement — that must be cleared from site before new construction can start. Tippers move this material continuously to recycling yards or disposal sites, keeping the demolition face clear for the excavator. Without tippers, the excavator is forced to spend time moving debris instead of demolishing.

Best practice

Segregate steel reinforcement from concrete rubble at source — rebar has high scrap value and can significantly offset your clearance cost. Use a magnet attachment on the excavator where available. Weigh loads at the gate to track disposal quantities against your structural survey estimate.
